A hare was being chased by an eagle. He looked round wildly for help, but nobody was in sight, except a little beetle.
“Do something to save me from the eagle,” cried the little hare in desperation.
“Courage,” said the little beetle, and when the eagle came down, she asked her to spare the poor hare.
“Should I, a mighty bird, listen to your entreaty, you ridiculous beetle !” scoffed the eagle. “See, this is how I treat your request.”
And the cruel eagle caught and ate the hare right before the beetle’s eyes.
The beetle was very upset by the way in which the eagle had scorned its request and gobbled up the hare. It determined to revenge itself on the great bird, and was continually on the watch to see where she built her nest.
Every time the eagle laid her eggs, the beetle flew up to her nest and rolled the eggs out, so they broke. The eagle built nest after nest, but however carefully the eagle tried to hide them, the beetle always found the nest and rolled the eggs out.
At last, the eagle went to the great king of birds and begged him to give her a safe place to lay her eggs so that she could hatch her chicks. The Bird King gave the eagle permission to lay the eggs in his lap. But the beetle was watching, and when the eggs were laid, she took a ball of dirt, flew over, and dropped it onto the Bird King’s lap. Without thinking, the Bird King got up to shake off the dirt, and the eagle’s eggs rolled down and broke.
